Elvington staff videos & statement on ‘live online teaching’

Dear Parents/Carers,

Please follow the various links below to access videos made by Elvington’s staff.  These videos will hopefully maintain a connection with your child/ren and their teacher.  In case you missed these recordings when they were first released, they are now altogether in this centralised location: www.elvingtonprimary.org.uk/achieving-success/home-learning/elvington-staff-videos

There are a number of areas covered from bedtime stories; lessons on angles; the science behind handwashing; phonics; reading comprehension; Aesop’s Fables; circuit training; mathematical magic; making a cheesecake and many more…

Miss. Rushmer has created a number of videos which are accessible via Tapestry.

Statement on ‘live online teaching’

I am aware a number of parents/carers are requesting either ‘live online teaching’ or Zoom style meetings.  I would like to explain why we will not be utilising this approach at Elvington Church of England Primary School at this time:

  • Research-informed practice – the failure to mimic what happens in the classroom is probably why the Educational Endowment Foundation (EEF) found that there was no benefit in carrying out remote teaching, via live lessons, over teaching via materials that have been prepared in advance. Instead, they found that what mattered was the quality of the materials used to teach remotely.
  • Keeping to the strict protocols the Government have put in place for the children we currently have in school is consuming all of our time; this would make the prospect of supervising and staffing virtual lessons impossible.
  • There is a significant risk that inappropriate content could infiltrate what could appear to be a secure meeting/lesson.
  • GDPR restrictions and safeguarding concerns are sizeable.
  • Children could be excluded due to the availability of technology. Not all pupils would be able to complete the work at the time it was set, often because they are having to share devices between different members of the family.
  • Technological glitches, linked to Wi-Fi connection etc. would impact on the flow of lessons.

I appreciate that some schools may be taking different approaches.  However, following an email consultation of Primary Headteachers across City of York Schools (Friday 12th June 2020), all 28 schools that responded, stated that they did not use ‘live online teaching’.

If you would like to discuss the aforementioned points, please do not hesitate to contact me via email: head@elvingtonprimary.org.uk.

I would also like to this opportunity to remind you that class teachers will be contacting the parents/carers of those children in their class who are not currently attending school.  These calls will take place next week (week beginning Monday 15th June), following this schedule:

– Miss. Rushmer on Monday

– Miss. Palmer on Tuesday

– Mrs. Granger on Wednesday

– Mrs. Holmes on Thursday

– Mrs. Haffey on Friday

Yours sincerely,

Mr. Andrew Buttery
